Mr Thorne usually organised the matches there being regular games against local teams. These included secondary schools who played rugby and independent boarding schools such as Wrekin College and Tetenhall. Games would either take place on a Wednesday afternoon or Saturday morning. If you wanted to check whether you had been included in the school team it was always displayed on the wooden school notice board opposite the staffroom. The team would be written in pen in rugby formation by Mr Thorne. The particular year team I played for never lost a game apart from when we were pitted against a sixth form side. Having beaten everyone including the mighty Wrekin College (the real Harry Potter boarding school) it was decided to see if we could take on a team two years older than ourselves. Unfortunately we lost the match which still hurts today after all these years, I call for a rematch. Quite a number of us continued playing after we left school, firstly for Earlsdon and then Old Wheatleyans, Bablake old boys. These included such luminaries as Steve spud Taylor, Terry Hudson, Simon Weclawek, Tony Kemp, Alan Bolstridge and Dave Irish. Happy Days. Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com
